ACTIONS: Sedative, relaxant, anti-spasmodic, anti-anxiety, lowers blood pressure
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Valerian is a sedative helps alleviate anxiety, pain, insomnia, and muscle spasms. Often used as a tranquilizer, but sluggishness is reported as a side effect. The herb is also used to reduce menopausal symptoms. Valerian has a similar effect on cats as catnip, so you may need to protect your patch with chicken wire.

GROWTH PATTERN: Valerian is a perennial plant that grows well in well-drained, rich soil. It grows to 3 feet tall and prefers full sun. To propagate, root cuttings are used and self-sow and spread through a well-established root system.

COUNTERINDICATIONS: Caution must be taken when operating heavy machinery or a vehicle. Can cause depression if used over a long period of time.
DOSAGE: For insomnia take 1-2 300mg capsules pm. As a tincture for anxiety or menstrual symptoms, 1 tsp 3-4 times a day.
