ACTIONS: Sedative, antispasmodic, tranquilizer.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Passionflower is an antispasmodic and nervine. It relieve spasms, reduce anxiety, is mildly sedative and alleviate insomnia. Also treats hyperactivity, agitation, PMS symptoms, menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and anxiety. A mild infusion will reduce eye strain and ocular infections.
COMBINATIONS: Valerian, Passionflower and St Johns Wort.
GROWTH PATTERN: Passionflower is a perennial which grows best in the south below zone 7 in most types of soil. Can be grown indoors in the North. It is a vine and may grow up to 30 feet outdoors. It tolerates partial sun and regular watering with good drainage. Must be pruned hard to encourage flowering.
SPIRITUAL: Spanish Missionaries believed this flower was a representation of Jesus crucifixion and the thorns a symbol of his passion. This is how the flower got its name.
COUNTERINDICATIONS:
DOSAGE: For anxiety and perseveration, drink 1 tsp tincture a day. For insomnia drink 1-2 cups in evening. For anxiety and stress take 2 capsules a day.
