Nettles
(Urtica dioca)

PARTS USED: Aerial portions

ACTIONS: Alterative, astringent, galactagogue, adaptogen. Tonifies liver yin, tonifies Blood, breaks up stagnation of lymph system, restores endocrine system and cools the Blood.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: All degenerative and chronic disorders. For all hormonal imbalances, especially with estrogen deficiency. Rich in iron, silicon, and potassium. Great for anemia during pregnancy or extreme blood loss such as heavy menstrual bleeding. Works well with kidney qi stagnation and chronic urinary tract infections. Great for allergic reactions especially seasonal allergies, good for allergic asthma. Freeze dried or tinctures are the best for these allergies. Helps restore connective tissue. Good for any liver or metabolic disorders.

COMBINATIONS: For allergies use with eyebright, yellow dock and goldenrod. For eruptive skin disorders use with dandelion and red clover.

GROWTH PATTERN: A common weed found by many roadsides. Best collected in early summer. Be sure to wear long sleeves.

SPIRITUAL: Nettles were believed to be brought by the Roman legions to battle arthritis.

COUNTERINDICATIONS: None

DOSAGE: Nettles are delicious as a fresh vegetable, which can be steamed. Standard dosages for a tincture or capsules are recommended. Otherwise an infusion will suffice.
