ACTIONS: Uterine and ovarian tonic, promotes menstrual flow, diuretic. Also good tonic for digestion and genitourinary conditions
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: Helps tonify the uterus and ovaries, encourages a regular menstrual flow. Helps ovaries release eggs at appropriate time during the month. Must be taken for several months to have significant effect on the menstrual cycle. Is used for endometriosis, uterine infections, ovarian cysts, and menopause.
COMBINATIONS: Combine with cramp bark, beth root, and wild yam to prevent miscarriage in first trimester. Can be used again at end of pregnancy to help with labor.
GROWTH PATTERN: Grows best in the woods of central and north America. Likes shade and rich humousy soil in dense woods and thickets.
SPIRITUAL: Native American used this herb for many menstrual conditions.
COUNTERINDICATIONS: Is an amphoteric emmenagogue. May be used in first trimester to prevent miscarriage and in last weeks to prepare for labor. High dosage may cause stomach upset.
DOSAGE: For menopausal symptoms, use decoction, 1/2 cup a day. For uterine tonic take 10 drops tincture 4 times a day. For miscarriage combine as above and take 1/2 tsp every half hour until chance of miscarriage has passed.
